First it was 32, now it is 26, the final cut to 23 for the Socceroos’ squad for the journey to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Football tournament is next on the radar and there is no lack of speculation concerning Socceroos’ Coach Bert van Marwijk’s three remaining cuts.
Something that could really make the suspense even more suspensfuller would be the surprise announcement by Jarryd Hayne that he is abandoning rugby to pursue his dream of playing soccer, but since Hayne has no previous top-level experience at the game…
Wait, that would not be an impediment of any sort.
Maybe Nick Kyrgios could throw his hat into the ring as well, given that his love of basketball went unrequited.
Now that Jamie Maclaren, Bailey Wright, Alex Gersbach, Apostolos Giannou, Alex Susnjar and Mitch Langerak have all been relegated, there are only three players whose future’s hang from van Marwijk’s tenterhooks.
Langerak’s omission was perplexing to some, but as he was considered the go-to back up goalkeeper over the past seven years, despite not playing much football on a regular basis, he can now be considered as the gone back up goalkeeper. Langerak was a starter in the German second tier, which, nationalistic pride aside, is still far above Aussie first tier, but some referred to him as Porous Langerak, as much leaked through him.
We have plenty of time to cast suggestions to van Marwijk, as the final cuts will be made on June 3, but we seriously doubt that the Dutchman who stepped in for the self-stood down Ange Postecoglou will give much weight to our suggestions regarding Hayne and Kyrgios, which we intended tongue-in-cheek, as there are plenty out there who live, eat, breathe and sleep football and are much better qualified to advise van Marwijk.
We are less serious than the Socceroos’ chances.
The next fortnight will be agonizing for those on the bubble, as it is apparent that many are called, but only 23 are chosen.
